Google Rolls Out September 2023 Helpful Content Update

With the latest update, however, it seems that the search giant has loosened its stance on AI-generated content. Google revised its guidance by removing the “written by people” part and replacing it with “created for people”. 

Nevertheless, Google warned that websites are still likely to suffer a decrease in traffic if they continue to publish content without value, regardless of whether humans write them or not.

Google Clamps Down on Websites Hosting Third-Party Content 

The latest search algorithm update has also seen Google tightening its reins on websites hosting third-party content on their site’s main part or a subdomain. For example, a news site may host credit card affiliate content on one of its subdomains, sharing its ranking power to help the third-party content appear more prominently on Google.

Gary Illyes, an analyst for the search giant, revealed that they have received plenty of reports and complaints about websites that “rent out” their subdomains or subdirectories to other parties. Often, these sites have no oversight over the content hosted on their subdomains. As a result, the low-quality microsites have been receiving good search rankings unfairly. 

Google warns against such a practice, stressing that third-party content may be included in the site-wide signals the search giant generates, such as the helpfulness of a piece of content, and hurt one’s overall search ranking.
